Where some have failed to pass muster, Geithner gets a pass

Zoe Baird: President Clinton’s first choice for attorney general, Baird withdrew her nomination in January 1993 after admitting she violated federal law by employing an illegal immigrant Peruvian couple as household help and failing to pay taxes on their $2,000 monthly wages. At the time, Baird was chief legal counsel for Aetna Life & Casualty Co. in New Haven, Conn., earning $500,000 a year. The Peruvian woman cared for Baird’s son; her husband was Baird’s chauffeur. A 1986 federal immigration law made it illegal to hire undocumented workers.

U. S. District Judge Kimba Wood: Expected to be Clinton’s second choice for attorney general, Wood withdrew her name from consideration two weeks after Baird. The New York judge said her baby sitter of seven years had been in the country illegally when she was hired in early 1986. Such employment was not against the law at the time. Wood stressed that she had broken no laws and had paid the required employment taxes.

Tell me how the following would not disqualify Timothy Reichter from serving as Secretary of the Treasury, head of the IRS?
The disclosure Tuesday that Obma’s choice for treasury secretary, New York Federal Reserve chief Timothy Geithner, failed to pay $34,000 in taxes and employed a housekeeper without proper immigration papers was another jarring distraction just days before Obama’s inauguration – and raises fresh questions about his team’s judgment, vetting procedures and political sensitivities.
This is wrong for several reasons, not the least of which is that it is not fair to those who have been disqualified before him for the same thing.  Nothing is fair any more, there is no equity, all are not treated equally and held to the same standard.  And I don’t care to rush into this the same way the Wall Street bailout was rushed into.  Others have been disqualified for the same or lesser offenses and to put him in charge of the U. S. Treasury and the IRS when he can’t pay his own taxes is beyond ridiculous.
Harry Reid says it’s just a little hiccup.
