Leave Roland Burris Alone!

Let the man have his Senate seat and get off his back.

I really don’t know what the problem is with Mr. Burris.  If all calling for him to resign would just shut up, there would not be a problem.  And if — if — he had to walk in by himself last night as some kind of a shun, then all the Senators should be ashamed.  I absolutely hate it when someone cries race or racist, but I am beginning to wonder if that’s what it is.  First they block him from the Senate floor so he can’t be sworn in with the rest of the Senate, and now they want him to resign.

He obviously wants the position, I think he considers it an honor that he maybe has hoped, he was duly and legitimately appointed, and he seems to me to be an honorable man, so just exactly what has he done that he should resign?

And besides that, if Tim Tax Cheat Geithner can be Secretary of the Treasury and IRS, Mr. Burris can surely be a Senator.

In major turn-around Obama now says Burris should be seated quickly

Now it is becoming a little clearer — MSNBC is reporting that Obama stepped in yesterday and told Harry Reid to more or less make this Burris “distraction” go away.

And there’s this from the Chicago Tribune:

Obama told Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and others when he visited Capitol Hill this week “that if Burris had legal standing—and it appears he has—he should be seated as quickly as possible,” a senior Democratic official said Wednesday. Obama earlier had sided with Reid’s opposition to the appointment.

What’s interesting is why did they take that route to begin with.  Maybe they thought Burris would not accept or that Blagojevich would back off but they had to know there would be problems with their stance.  And Barack Obama, constitutional scholar that he is, certainly knew he was on thin ice.  Looks a little bit like Obama flipped on Reid, doesn’t it?  He went out on Sunday Meet The Press saying Burris would not be seated, thinking Obama had his back.  Nope.  Not surprising.  But now they are all backpedaling and Burris will be seated, as he should be.

See this rendition by John Kass, Obama serves Reid taste of the Chicago way.

And P.E.B.O has made how many speeches now on the economy, I think four or five, and yet he can’t make a simple statement on the Gaza crisis because “there’s only one president at a time.”  Today he makes a — the sky is falling, major panic, need more money, hurry, hurry, hurry print more money speech…..  It makes me ill.  $800 billion plus?

Senate blocked Burris

Our fine Senate, the one with the lowest public opinion rating possible short of zero, took the low road and blocked Roland Burris today.  I really didn’t think it would happen.

Capitol police officers tried to clear a path for Mr. Burris. “You can’t keep a regular citizen from walking into the Capitol,” one officer shouted.

Somehow, Citizen Burris made his way to the office of Nancy Erickson, the secretary of the Senate, to whom he presented his credentials, only to have her reject them. Afterward, the aspiring legislator stood in the rain outside and declared, “Members of the media, my name is Roland Burris, the junior senator from the State of Illinois.”

Where was Harry Reid?  I don’t know, probably underneath a desk somewhere.  Oh, here’s his statement:  “Mr. Burris is not in possession of the necessary credentials from the state of Illinois,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said in his speech opening the new session of Congress.

They have not only convicted Rod Blagojevich without the benefit of a trial and with no consideration of his presumption of innocence, they want to confer to Mr. Burris some taint due to allegations of wrongdoing by Blagojevich.  Wrong.  This is just wrong.  And I believe it is unconstitutional as well.  Some Senator is now blathering on about some “cloud being over the process” and how they have a “moral obligation” of some sort.  Blah. Blah. Blah.  (It was Ben Nelson (D) Nebraska).

Good account Here.

According to the Chicago Tribune the Supreme Court has said in the past that the House and Senate cannot refuse to seat someone who meets qualifications.

The democrats are behaving in a disgraceful and childish manner, led by Top Democrat, President-elect Obama.

But as Colbert said on “Colbert and Colmes” we all know the democrats are racists and the only reason they wanted Obama elected was to get him out of the Senate so they could be all-white again. And after all, they have to make sure there is no “taint” on the esteemed Senate.  Now, as for comedians, they should definitely be blocked!  🙂

And just for the record, I don’t think it is racial, it probably would have happened to anybody Blago chose.  They are just trying to get the Blagojevich matter to go away, but, of course, it is only keeping it in the spotlight.

Standing in the Need of Prayer

In an unprecedented move, the Illinois attorney general, Lisa Madigan, asked the state’s highest court today to strip scandal-plagued Gov. Rod Blagojevich of his powers.

“I recognize that this is an extraordinary request, but these are extraordinary circumstances,” Madigan said at a news conference.

It was not immediately clear when the Supreme Court might take up the matter. The justices also have the discretion to deny the attorney general’s request.

The move came as the governor prayed with several ministers in his home before heading to his office, telling them he is innocent and will be vindicated “when you hear each chapter completely written,” according to one of the pastors.

Conversations Between Rahm Emanuel and Blagojevich Likely (Updated)

“I’m confident that no representatives of mine would have any part of any deals related to this seat”…..”What I’m absolutely certain about is that our office had no involvement around any deal-making, that I’m absolutely certain of. “

Fox Chicago News has learned about possible conversations between a top Obama aide and the governor regarding the open senate seat.

Craig Hall of Fox Chicago News reports that:

“A reliable source familiar with the investigation confirmed that Rahm Emanuel did, in fact, have  multple conversations with Governor Blagojevich and his chief of staff, John Harris, about the seat.  The source says there was a list of names given to the governor’s office of candidates that would be acceptable to President-elect Barack Obama.”

It is further reported that these conversations took place after the wire taps were in place and after Rahm Emanuel was appointed as Obama’s chief of staff, so the conversations are likely recorded and in the hands of the FBI.

See video:

When asked about this by a Sun Times reporter, at a concert he was attending for his kids, he wouldn’t answer, saying he was there to be a father and pushed the reporter’s recorder away.

UPDATE:  Blagojevich chief of staff, John Harris, has resigned.  He was arrested along with Blago on Tuesday and released on bond.

UPDATE:  How long before Emanuel goes under the bus?  Some give it a week.

“I did not speak to the governor about these issues” #2

KHQA reports this by Alexis Hunt on 11.08.08, about three days after it was reported that the meeting between Obama and Blagojevich was to take place.  Here it says “they met earlier this week to discuss it.”  Did they meet or didn’t they?  Obama says they did not.   I’m sure he knows if they talked or not.  This, again, is hard to read, but if you go to the link at the bottom, it can be magnified and read easily.

“I had no contact with the governor’s office.  I did not speak to the governor about these issues.  That I know for certain.”

Governor Blagojevich and Barack Obama Connection in Question

David Axelrod said on November 23rd that President-elect Obama had talked to Blagojevich about the open Sanate seat.  Axelrod has now said that he “mis-spoke.”  There’s a video @  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o19ovKcLHp0

Obama said today that he had not talked to the Governor about the Senate seat vacated by his election as president.  The Affidavit makes many references to the “president-elect” after the election.

Here are some other comments and connections between Governor Blago and Obama:

Obama Advised Blagojevich On His Victorious Gubernatorial Run. “That year, [Obama] gained his first high-level experience in a statewide campaign when he advised the victorious gubernatorial candidate Rod Blagojevich, another politician with a funny name and a message of reform.” (Ryan Lizza, “Making It,” The New Yorker, 7/21/08)

* Obama: “If the governor asks me to work on his behalf, I’ll be happy to do it.” (John Patterson, “Senator Says He’s Still Willing To Help Blagojevich Despite Hiring Concerns,” Chicago Daily Herald, 7/27/06)

Obama Endorsed Blagojevich For A Second Term. “Obama, who endorsed Blagojevich for a second term nearly 18 months ago, said he’s ready to help Illinois democrats in the upcoming elections.” (John Patterson, “Senator Says He’s Still Willing To Help Blagojevich Despite Hiring Concerns,” Chicago Daily Herald, 7/27/06)

* Obama: “We’ve got a governor in Rod Blagojevich who has delivered consistently on behalf of the people of Illinois.” (Deanna Bellandi, “Illinois Democrats Talk Unity But Don’t Show It,” The Associated Press, 8/16/06)

The Affidavit puts forth some possibilites and discussions about the candidates for the Senate seat, not by name but by number.  According to Gawker.com, Candidate 5 is either Emil Jones or Jesse Jackson, Jr.   Candidate 1,  Obama’s pick, is apparently Valerie Jarrett, now a member of the Obama Transition Team.  Affadivit @ http://media.npr.org/documents/2008/dec/illinois_complaint.pdf

Emil Jones/Jesse Jackson Jr. “Candidate 5” in the criminal complaint is either Illinois Senate President Emil Jones or Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. Obama didn’t want this person appointed (which is why we think it’s Emil), but Blago kept threatening to appoint him anyway, as a bargaining tool. Now. Candiate 5 was supposed to give Blago something “tangible up front.” If they were willing to do this, in exchange for the seat, it looks bad for them. Emil is reported to have aided young Obama’s state legislative career, back in the day, with plum assignments. And Jesse Jackson Jr is a family friend. Either way, there’s a connection that might look bad.

But I am sure without a doubt that Barack Obama does not even know Governor Blagojevich — and if he does know him, he’s not the man he knew.  🙂
