Penn State Ex-president Spanier charged with perjury, obstruction of justice, endangering welfare of children

Maybe there will be some justice in this case since they finally got to the college officials responsible for the cover-up for over 20 years.

I doubt it will restore the damage done to Joe Paterno’s name being dragged through the mud by the corrupt media,  but at least they finally got to the culprits.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Two Penn State administrators facing new charges they hushed up child sexual abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky were preparing to be arraigned, while the university’s former president was not due in court until next week.

The arraignment of athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz on Friday comes a day after they and former president Graham Spanier were accused in a withering 39-page grand jury report of conspiring to conceal complaints about Sandusky, giving him time and access to molest more boys before his arrest nearly a year ago.

“This plan of action undertaken by these three administrators, who formed the very apex of decision making and power at Penn State, was created out of a desire to shield Sandusky from the criminal process and, perhaps most importantly, to spare the university tremendous negative publicity and embarrassment,” the jurors wrote.

The legal proceedings for Curley and Schultz were scheduled inside a district court in suburban Harrisburg, while Spanier’s first appearance was expected to be Wednesday.

Prosecutors alleged the men’s “conspiracy of silence” extended all the way to the top at Penn State, including decisions not to alert police or child welfare authorities after getting a 2001 report of Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in a team shower.

Attorney General Linda Kelly said at a Capitol news conference that all three “knowingly testified falsely and failed to provide important information and evidence.”

Spanier was charged with perjury, obstruction, endangering the welfare of children, failure to properly report suspected abuse and conspiracy. Curley and Schultz face new charges of endangering the welfare of children, obstruction and conspiracy. They were charged with perjury and failure to report abuse almost exactly a year ago, and await a January trial on those counts.

“This was not a mistake by these men. This was not an oversight. It was not misjudgment on their part,” Kelly said. “This was a conspiracy of silence by top officials to actively conceal the truth.” http://news.yahoo.com/charges-bring-penn-state-officials-court-063824034–spt.html

Here’s a couple posts I wrote during the peak of the media coverage.  There are some others that are interesting, especially the one about district attorney, Ray Gricar, who disappeared.

Victim #1 provides emotional testimony in Sandusky child rape trial

Victim #1 takes the stand today.  Victim 1 is the most recent incident, and he is only 18 as of this date.  He was the victim who first told about the abuse.

The sobs from the witness stand were loud and prolonged, the cracking voice of Victim No. 1 in the Jerry Sandusky child sexual molestation trial gasping for breath as he detailed repeated acts of oral sex with the former Penn State defensive coordinator.

Now 18, the witness sat with his hands clasped in his lap, leaned into a microphone and slowly, painfully and purposefully delivered his disturbing memories of being an 11-, 12-year-old boy, alone with Sandusky on the waterbed in Sandusky’s State College basement.

The sighs and sniffs echoed around a rapt Centre County Courtroom as jurors looked on, a couple noticeably disturbed. A few grimaced at the retelling and shook their heads.

Eye witness, Mike McQueary, is testifying this afternoon.  He is testifying as to Victim #2.  Victim #2 is unidentified at this time.

Spanier to be charged? Emails between Spanier, Schultz, and Curley come to light in Sandusky case

Investigators are mulling whether to bring charges against former Penn State president Graham Spanier for possibly helping to cover up child abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky, according to a new report.

Authorities have “major new evidence,” including emails between Spanier, former university vice president Gary Schultz and ex-athletic director Tim Curley, NBC News reported Monday.

Schultz and Curley have pleaded not guilty to perjury charges for allegedly lying to a grand jury about what they were told about Sandusky’s alleged conduct.

One email between Spanier and Schultz reportedly concluded with them agreeing it would be “humane” not to tell authorities about possible child molestation by the assistant football coach in 2001.

There is absolutely no telling how deep and how dark this thing goes.
Cover up?  There is no doubt, and for all those years where there were more victims, it was known what was going on with Sandusky.  The latest victim (Victim #1), the boy who brought this all to light, is only 18 years old today.
What is not made clear is the fact that Jerry Sandusky did not work for Penn State in any capacity since 1999.  June 1999
Sandusky retires from Penn State but still holds emeritus status.
He was given an office and unlimited access to university facilities by the university.
And Spanier goes to work for the federal government (no surprise):  http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2012/04/post_340.html

NBC news issued a national report this morning citing legal sources who said more charges are likely and could include former Penn State President Graham Spanier.

Report:  The report said investigators have “major new evidence” including emails exchanged in 2001 by Spanier and university officials Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, both already facing charges of perjury and failure to report a crime.  http://pennstate.247sports.com/Board/18/Report-Graham-Spanier-to-be-charged-10080541/1
