Obama promised No Earmarks (video) $4 billion included in spending bill (Update/signed)

“We’re gonna ban all earmarks”

What President Obama said in March 2009 regarding earmarks and pork barrel spending:

Just weeks before returning to their districts for Christmas, Congress is poised to give the gift of pork–roughly $4 billion of it (One account says 12 billion).

More than 5,000 earmarks were included in the $447 billion omnibus spending bill passed yesterday by the House, funding “pet projects” of key members of Congress from both parties and all regions of the country. The Senate will vote on the bill this weekend. …..

…..Which they just passed on today (Sunday).

The Senate passed a huge end-of-the-year $1.1 trillion omnibus spending measure Sunday afternoon by a vote of 57-35.

See Senator John McCain in his address before the Senate yesterday, reiterating some of the ridiculous projects and expenditures in this spending bill. 409 pages of earmarks.  Can anybody say this use of tax money is needed in a time when the unemployment rate is 10 percent?

McCain’s office highlighted a number of earmarks in the omnibus that he considered wasteful, including $600,000 for a water storage tower construction in Ada, Okla., which has about 16,000 residents $30,000 for the Woodstock Film Festival Youth Initiative; and $750,000 for the design and fabrication of exhibits in the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates in Des Moines, Iowa.

And there are hundreds more just as frivolous.

P. S. Update:  OF COURSE HE DID NOT VETO THE BILL.  SIGNED IT PRIVATELY….THAT SAYS IT ALL.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama has signed into law a $1.1 trillion bill that increases the budgets in many areas of the government by about 10 percent, including health, law enforcement and veterans’ programs.

Obama signed the bill privately at the White House on Wednesday after receiving the bill from Congress on Sunday.

57 Tea Parties in Florida alone this weekend

“”In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury.””

But now instead of Britain, it is our own government that has become oppressive and unresponsive and corrupt. There are 57 tea parties/tax protests being held in Florida alone this weekend. Don’t let anybody fool you, these are real people expressing real frustrations and outrage. We will be heard.

Dick Cheney on national security – Hooray!

I like Cheney’s speech today. So good to hear somebody stand up and speak out. In so many places, I can say “he took the words right out of my mouth,” especially in the following quotes:

“”Yet for all these exacting efforts to do a hard and necessary job and to do it right, we hear from some quarters nothing but feigned outrage based on a false narrative. In my long experience in Washington, few matters have inspired so much contrived indignation and phony moralizing as the interrogation methods applied to a few captured terrorists.

I might add that people who consistently distort the truth in this way are in no position to lecture anyone about “values”…..

[I think I detect a little bit of Saul Alinsky’s Rule #4 in all the moralization – ‘ Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules,’ while all the while practicing ‘the ends justify the means’ yourself.]

…..In the category of euphemism, the prizewinning entry would be a recent editorial in a familiar newspaper that referred to terrorists we’ve captured as, quote, “abducted.” Here we have ruthless enemies of this country, stopped in their tracks by brave operatives in the service of America, and a major editorial page makes them sound like they were kidnap victims, picked up at random on their way to the movies.….

…..It is a fact that only detainees of the highest intelligence value were ever subjected to enhanced interrogation. You’ve heard endlessly about waterboarding. It happened to three terrorists. One of them was Khalid Sheikh Muhammed – the mastermind of 9/11, who has also boasted about beheading Daniel Pearl…..

…..blames America for the evil that others do…..””

I listened to both speeches and I don’t have a doubt in my mind that the terrorists are happier with POTUS’ views than with Cheney’s.

One thing about it, it is not an opinion or a theory that we have not been attacked again, it is a FACT.


[Has anyone noticed the POTUS does not know the proper usage of “a” and “an”?  He also called the Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, William Gates.  Wouldn’t bring it up except that he’s so, you know, “intelligent.”  But whatever…..] 🙂

Torn denim 2009 Just when you thought they would never return… ripped jeans are back. Starting in 2008 with a horde of sexed-up editorial shoots and celebrity sightings, those torn denim shorts and shredded jeans are hitting the streets.  Ripped denim in 2009 is certainly sexy and revealing – possibly more than ever.
