I missed this yesterday. Very strange indeed to hear him speak the words “Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.”
Note 09.16.14, I see this video has been taken down but here’s a link to another
I am assuming that he himself chose to read Psalm 46, but he does not seem all that comfortable reading it, with all the halts and the hisses at the end of words.
Yes, he did choose the Psalm himself. Here’s his reason:
WASHINGTON–President Obama read Psalm 46 at the New York ceremony Sunday marking the tenth anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. Principal deputy press secretary Josh Earnest explained why Obama selected that psalm. “The President chose a scripture which he believed was most appropriate — he believed it was particularly appropriate to use — to read scripture this morning. And he chose a passage that talks of persevering through very difficult challenges and emerging from those challenges stronger,” Earnest said.http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2011/09/why_obama_picked_psalm_46_to_r.html
Alrighty then. Now we know. The People’s Cube weighs in: http://thepeoplescube.com/peoples-blog/obama-is-god-t7794.html Posted: 09.12.11 @ 9:57 a.m.
“He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.”
Answer: Obama is referring to himself in the reading, …substitute “I” and “God” with “Obama”, and you’ll see what I mean. In addition, since the dawn of man, have you ever heard a person read scripture in public, without first referencing that it is indeed scripture? No reference to a Book? A Chapter? A verse? The author? NEVER! http://www.rightthewrong.net

I didn’t see this live. You mean he came to the podium and just started speaking without naming the scripture he was reading from as in “Psalms 46, may God bless the reading of His word”? That is really bizarre. In other words, he spoke as though they were his own words. Chilling.

To anwer my own question, I just watched video of what happened before he spoke. The president and first lady along with president Bush and Laura were standing behind what looks like maybe a bullet proof glass while a group sang the national anthem, then there was some bagpipes, Bloomberg spoke a few words (I couldn’t tell where he was but not on stage with president and others). Then there was a moment of silence at 8:46 when flight 11 hits the north tower. After that president Obama goes up a few steps to the podium and says: “God is our refuge and strength…..” and the rest of the psalm.
He did not say he was reading from scripture. He did not say anything at all. Just started in.
