PCAST: Swine flu may kill 30 to 90 thousand

Turns out the head honcho of PCAST and OSTP is none other than John Holdren, AKA the Science Czar.

The flu may hospitalize 1.8 million patients in the U.S. this year, filling intensive care units to capacity and causing “severe disruptions” during a fall resurgence, scientific advisers to the White House warned. Swine flu, also known as H1N1, may infect as much as half of the population and kill 30,000 to 90,000 people, double the deaths caused by the typical seasonal flu, according to the planning scenario issued yesterday by the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology. (PCAST)  [30,000 to 90,000 – left themselves just a tad of wiggle room there, didn’t they?]

I read this today and just out of curiosity I decided to check into who the sientific advisers to the White House actually were and who is in charge of the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology.

Turns out the head honcho of PCAST and OSTP is none other than John Holdren, AKA the Science Czar.  And so if anybody thought that maybe he was just a figurehead and not really advising the president, this should put those thoughts to rest.

John Holdren is serving as co-chair of PCAST in addition to his duties as Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President and Assistant to the President for Science and Technology.

It’s under the great seal of the Executive Office of the President. (Executive office of the president? Is this seal new?  I don’t remember seeing it before. Reminds me of this seal that came out during the campaign)

A 1973 book co-authored by Holdren includes passages about the human development and population controls, such as:

“The fetus, given the opportunity to develop properly before birth, and given the essential early socializing experiences and sufficient nourishing food during the crucial early years after birth, will ultimately develop into a human being.”

“Human beings cling jealously to their prerogative to reproduce as they please — and they please to make each new generation larger than the last — yet endless multiplication on a finite planet is impossible.”

He also has some other unusual views as giving trees and animals standing in a court of law.

Actions come from beliefs and it is more than a little telling as to who is advising the president with regard to these important matters.
