As to my question, “Is Obama still a member of the Senate?” Everything says, “will resign,” or “he says he is resigning,” or “to resign,” on Sunday, November 16th. Well did he? I guess so. This on the 16th from Roll Call. com says he did resign and Wikipedia has him resigning on the 16th of November, also.
President-elect Barack Obama officially resigned from the Senate on Sunday, announcing the move in a letter published in newspapers across his home state of Illinois, the Associated Press reported.
Obama quoted President Abraham Lincoln in the letter, which also bid farewell to the people of Illinois, asking for their support and prayers. “Today, I am ending one journey to begin another,” Obama wrote.
Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) has formed a panel to vet potential replacements for Obama.
Potential candidates to replace Obama are Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Illinois Senate President Emil Jones and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.
So he resigned last Sunday, just in time to miss last week’s post-election session on Capitol Hill to address the ailing economy and struggling auto industry.
And he did not even serve a complete term in the Senate — from January, 2005, to November 16, 2008, two years of which he spent campaigning for president.
Noted, also on Roll Call, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has decided to keep the chamber in session over the Thanksgiving break to block President Bush from making any unsavory recess appointments while Senators are out of town.
